Electric fireplaces have one big advantage over wood and gas: they put out little to no real heat at the wall, which means you can pair them with a real wood mantel with far fewer restrictions. Here's how to size, place, and style a mantel over an electric fireplace.
Do Electric Fireplaces Need a Mantel?
Not functionally — but visually, a mantel is what turns an electric insert from "a screen on the wall" into a fireplace. The mantel adds the architectural weight and shadow line that makes the whole installation read as a focal point. It also gives you display space where it matters most in the room.
Clearance: The Easy Part
Wood-burning fireplaces come with strict code clearances — typically 12 inches or more between the firebox opening and combustible materials. Most electric fireplaces don't produce enough surface heat for that to apply, but there are two rules to follow:
- Check your unit's manual. Manufacturers specify a minimum clearance above the unit — often 8–12 inches for models with top-mounted heat vents, and effectively zero for units that vent from the front or bottom.
- Mind the heat vent direction. If your electric fireplace blows heated air upward, mount the mantel above the vent's clearance zone so hot air isn't trapped against the wood.
For exact measuring and mounting heights, our mantel height guide covers standard dimensions and how to measure.
Sizing a Mantel Over an Electric Fireplace
The rule is proportional, not structural: the mantel should extend at least 3–6 inches beyond each side of the fireplace or media wall it sits above. Common pairings:
- Wall-mounted linear fireplaces (50–72" wide): a 60–72" mantel above, mounted 8–12" over the unit
- Electric insert in an existing firebox: size the mantel to the surround, not the insert — usually 60–72"
- Freestanding media-console units: skip the wall mantel or use a slim floating shelf above for display
Mounting a TV Above It?
Electric fireplaces and TVs share walls more than any other fireplace type. Keep at least 6–8 inches between the mantel top and the bottom of the TV, and choose a slimmer mantel (5–7" depth) so it doesn't block the viewing angle from seating. A deeper mantel can actually shield the TV from any rising warm air — one more reason the mantel earns its place.
Which Mantel Styles Work Best
Floating timber mantels — clean and substantial, the default pairing for modern linear electric fireplaces. Rustic and rough hewn — add organic texture to balance the smooth glass-and-metal look of an electric unit. Shaker and fluted profiles — tailored styles that suit transitional and contemporary rooms. Because there's no soot, smoke, or intense heat, finishes stay clean — even painted and light-colored mantels are practical over electric units.
Installation
Mounting is identical to any mantel shelf: a cleat or lag bolts driven into wall studs — never drywall anchors alone. Our mantel shelf installation guide walks through the full process; most installs take under an hour.
Every mantel in our wood fireplace mantels collection works over electric fireplaces — solid real wood, concealed mounting hardware included, in lengths from 36" to 84". Not sure which style? Start with our guide to choosing a fireplace mantel.
