Figuring out how much wallpaper to order comes down to two numbers: divide your wall's width by 2 and round up for the number of panels, then round your wall's height up to the nearest 2 ft for the length of each panel. Panels are 2 ft wide and sold in 2 ft length increments, so the math stays simple no matter what size wall you're working with.
Traditional wallpaper is notorious for confusing coverage math, double rolls, pattern repeat waste, calculators that ask for square footage and still leave you guessing. A 2 ft-wide, 2 ft-increment system skips all of that. You measure your wall, do two quick calculations, and order exactly what fits.
The Simple Math
- Number of panels: wall width ÷ 2, rounded up to the next whole number
- Length per panel: wall height, rounded up to the nearest 2 ft increment
Worked Example: A 9 ft x 9 ft Wall
Say your wall is 9 ft wide and 9 ft tall. For width: 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5, rounded up to 5 panels. For height: 9 ft rounds up to the nearest 2 ft increment, which is 10 ft. So you'd order 5 panels at 10 ft each, giving you 10 ft of total width covered (a little extra for trimming and alignment) and 10 ft of length per panel (enough to cover a 9 ft wall with room to trim at the top or bottom).
Step by Step
- Measure the width of the wall you're covering, wall to wall or corner to corner.
- Divide by 2 and round up. That's your panel count.
- Measure the height of the wall, floor to ceiling.
- Round up to the nearest 2 ft. That's the length to order for each panel.
What About Doors and Windows?
For most rooms, order for the full width of the wall rather than subtracting door and window openings. You'll trim around them during installation, and having a little extra material makes it much easier to keep the pattern lined up continuously across the wall rather than trying to piece together offcuts.
More Than One Wall?
Measure each wall separately using the same method. If your walls are the same height, you can order all your panels at that one length. If heights differ (a slanted ceiling, for example), calculate each wall's panel length separately.
