How to Hang Shelves: A Step-by-Step Guide (Floating, Bracket & Heavy-Duty)

Hanging shelves is one of the most satisfying DIY upgrades you can make in an afternoon — but doing it wrong means sagging brackets, cracked drywall, or a shelf on the floor. Here's how to get it right the first time.

What you'll need: stud finder, level, drill, tape measure, pencil, anchors rated for your shelf's weight

Step 1: Decide What Your Shelf Needs to Hold

Weight determines everything. Books and dishes need stud-mounted support; a few picture frames can live on drywall anchors. As a rule of thumb: under 20 lbs, quality anchors are fine. Over 20 lbs — or any floating shelf — find the studs.

Step 2: Find Your Studs

Run a stud finder across the wall and mark both edges of each stud (they're typically 16" apart, center to center). No stud finder? Tap the wall and listen for the solid, dull thud, or look for existing nail lines in baseboards.

Step 3: Mark Your Height — and Check It Twice

Standard heights: 4½–5 ft for display shelves at eye level, 18–24" above counters for kitchen shelves, and 54–60" above the floor for shelves over a sofa. Hold the shelf up and step back before you drill — what looks right on a tape measure doesn't always look right in the room.

Step 4: Level Is Non-Negotiable

Mark your first mounting point, then use a level — not your eye — to mark the second. A shelf that's off by even a quarter inch reads as crooked from across the room.

Step 5: Mount by Shelf Type

Floating shelves: These hide their hardware inside the shelf body, so the internal bracket must anchor into studs (or use heavy-duty anchors rated 50+ lbs). Mount the cleat/bracket first, check level again, then slide the shelf on.

Bracket shelves: Install brackets to studs where possible. Attach the shelf board to the brackets from underneath.

Heavy-duty (mantels & thick wood shelves): Solid wood shelves like fireplace mantels need lag bolts or a mounting cleat driven into studs — never drywall anchors alone. Installing above a firebox? See our dedicated guide on how to install a fireplace mantel shelf.

Step 6: Load It Gradually

Place the heaviest items over the bracket or stud points, not the unsupported middle. If the shelf flexes or the hardware shifts, take everything off and re-check the mounting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trusting drywall anchors with floating shelves (the #1 cause of falls)
  • Measuring from the floor instead of using a level (floors aren't level)
  • Drilling into a stud's edge instead of its center
  • Hanging kitchen shelves too high to reach comfortably

Once your shelves are up, the fun part starts — here's how to style floating shelves so they actually look good, and how to clean wood shelves to keep them that way. Not sure which shelf is right for your space? Our floating shelves buying guide breaks it down room by room.
