Dogberry faux wood board and batten shutters bring the look of rough-sawn cedar to your exterior in a material made for low upkeep. Each shutter is molded from solid polyurethane with real wood grain cast into the surface, then finished with exterior paint in Midnight Black, Russet or Bronze. They're moisture resistant, they install in minutes with the included hardware, and you can repaint them any time with standard exterior paint. Sold in pairs, 14" wide, in 48", 60" and 72" heights.
What are faux wood shutters made of?
These shutters are cast from high-density polyurethane, the same material used for exterior architectural trim and millwork. The mold is taken from real rough-sawn boards, so the grain, saw marks and batten edges have real depth and read as wood from the curb and up close. Polyurethane doesn't absorb water and isn't affected by insects, which makes it a good fit for coastal climates, heavy shade, irrigation spray, or anywhere you'd rather not refinish on a schedule.
If you love the character of real wood and don't mind a bit of seasonal care, take a look at our cedar board and batten shutters. Both lines share the same profile, so you can mix them on one house and match the look.
Are these shutters painted or stained?
Painted. Each pair ships with a factory-applied exterior paint finish in your choice of three colors:
- Midnight Black: a deep, neutral black that works on white, gray and brick exteriors
- Russet: a warm reddish brown with the look of a dark walnut stain
- Bronze: a lighter golden brown, closer to a natural cedar tone
Because the finish is paint rather than stain, you can change the color later. Clean the surface, apply a coat of exterior acrylic latex paint, and the grain texture shows through the new color just like it does from the factory.
What sizes are available?
Three heights, all 14" wide and 1.5" thick, sold in pairs:
| Height | Fits windows roughly |
|---|---|
| 48" | 42" to 54" tall |
| 60" | 54" to 66" tall |
| 72" | 66" to 78" tall |
For the traditional look, choose a height close to your window's trim-to-trim measurement. Shutters a little shorter than the window read as intentional; shutters much taller than the window don't.
How do you install faux wood shutters?
All mounting hardware is included in the box. The shutters are light enough that one person can hang them without help. Hold the shutter in place beside the window trim, mark the mounting points, drill, and fasten. Most installs take under fifteen minutes per shutter on wood, vinyl or fiber cement siding. On brick or stucco you'll want masonry anchors, which aren't included.
How do you clean and maintain them?
Rinse with a hose or wipe down with mild soap and water once or twice a year. There's nothing to seal or re-stain. If the color softens after years in direct sun, or you repaint the house and want the shutters to match, a single coat of exterior paint brings them back.

Frequently asked questions
Do faux wood shutters look fake?
Not these. The grain is molded from actual lumber rather than printed or embossed, so it has depth you can feel. From the sidewalk they're hard to tell apart from painted cedar.
Should I choose faux wood or cedar shutters?
Both give you the same board and batten look. Cedar is the pick if you want real wood you can stain to a custom tone and don't mind occasional refinishing. Polyurethane is the pick if you want to hang them and not think about them again, or if the spot gets a lot of moisture. Plenty of customers use cedar on the front of the house and faux wood on sides and back.
How many shutters come in an order?
Two. Every order is a matched pair, one for each side of the window.
Will the color fade?
The exterior paint finish holds up well, but like any painted exterior surface it will soften over many years of direct sun. Since the shutters are paintable, a fresh coat restores them.
Can I use them inside?
Yes. They're popular as decorative shutters flanking interior windows, as a headboard, or mounted on a wall as rustic accents.
Are they functional? Do they close over the window?
They're decorative and mount fixed to the wall beside the window. They don't swing shut.
Do they come in custom sizes or colors?
No. They're offered in the three standard heights and three colors listed above. If you need a different shade, the paintable finish means you can apply any exterior paint color you like.
