Dogberry Collections X Exterior Shutters are solid Cedar shutters featuring a bold X-brace design, sold in pairs, available in heights from 36″ to 84″, and available in a range of finishes. The X-pattern adds strong decorative structure to any exterior window and suits rustic, farmhouse, and mountain-home styles.
The X-brace is one of architecture's most confident decorative moves - diagonal boards crossing in the center of a panel, originally used to structurally stiffen large doors and gates. On the Dogberry Collections X Exterior Shutters, that bold geometry becomes a statement on the face of your home. Milled from Cedar and available in a range of finishes, these shutters are the strongest visual choice in our lineup - they read clearly from the street and give farmhouse, mountain, and craftsman exteriors the kind of character that photographs well and ages even better. Each pair is pre-finished and arrives ready to mount.

Common Questions
Does the X-brace add structural strength, or is it purely decorative?
On these shutters the X-brace is decorative rather than structural, since the shutters aren't operable - but the design references the historical practice of using diagonal braces to stiffen large wood doors and gates.
What home styles pair best with X-brace shutters?
Farmhouse, mountain lodge, and rustic craftsman exteriors are the most common pairings, since the bold diagonal pattern suits heavier timber and stone facades.
How is X-Bar different from Z-Bar?
X-Bar uses two diagonal braces crossing in the center of the panel. Z-Bar uses a single diagonal brace running corner to corner, framed by horizontal top and bottom rails - a more traditional barn-door motif.

Cedar Care & Maintenance
This care guidance is for Dogberry's cedar shutters and focuses on exterior stain.
Inspect annually: Check the finish for noticeable color fading and areas where coverage has worn away. Recoat as needed rather than waiting for the calendar alone. Our finish guide suggests 4–6 years for solid stain and 2–4 years for semi-transparent stain, with more frequent maintenance in harsh sun. These are general guidelines, not a guaranteed lifespan for your selected finish; follow the stain manufacturer's instructions.
Preparation and coverage: When staining unfinished cedar or refinishing, follow the stain manufacturer's cleaning, drying, surface-preparation and application instructions. Include the front, back, edges and exposed end grain in your preparation and coverage plan. Check compatibility with any existing finish before recoating.
Weathering and recoating: Inspect changes in color and finish coverage during your annual check. To retain the cedar grain's appearance, our guide recommends a semi-transparent exterior stain with UV inhibitors. Clean and prepare the surface as directed for the chosen stain before applying a fresh coat.
